I wonder if Focus Magic using the Focus mode is any better than Sharpen AI's Focus mode? I imagine a newer version of Focus Magic does better. I only use Focus for film scans using Blur Width 1-5 pixels and Amount 50% or 75%. I don't think I have ever tried Fix Motion Blur. At least that is what is in my very old 3.02 from 10+ years ago. Have you tried Focus Magic? It has 2 modes: Focus and Fix Motion Blur. All-in-all, it's an excellent option for sharpening, especially with hires or other problematically blurred images that don't respond particularly well to conventional sharpening strategies. Sometimes blending a Sharpen and a Stabilize rendering works well for averaging out different artifacts that each might produce. Focus mode seems to be pretty ineffective or otherwise generates too many artifact issues. Sharpen mode is perhaps a bit better than smart sharpening in PS but it usually doesn't match Stabilize. The stabilize option is, by a significant margin, the best one to use (Topaz Sharpen AI offers three modes: Sharpen, Stabilize, and Focus). Topaz Labs Sharpen AI: Artificial Common Sense From the examples in the comparison above, you can see that Focus Magic.

The deconvolution method in Topaz Sharpen AI is generally superior to anything I'm getting with various sharpening options/strategies in ACR/Photoshop for performing the required deblurring of the Oly hires shots.Ĭoincidentally just a few days ago I saw this article about it: Use this software to enhance old historic photos which have high sentimental value. Here are crops using the screen grabs from your comparison. Speaking of sharpening, I've been playing with Topaz Sharpen AI and find that the Stabilize option is particularly effective with squeezing out the detail in Oly Tripod HR and Handheld HR shots. On paper, it can repair out-of-focus images as well as motion blur, and recover lost details from images.Nice comparison. According to its website, the program uses " advanced forensic strength deconvolution technology to literally 'undo' blur".

Naturally, you shouldn't expect to take a series of badly out-of-focus photos and then fix them to look like magazine shots, but you can definitely play CSI with these tools, and with some luck, get some surprising results.įocus Magic is more than your simple blur fixer. While in most cases a blurry photo or video will never be restored to match a sharp, beautiful shoot, these tools can be used to salvage important details, and get things back into focus just enough to make the media presentable. It turns out there's are dedicated programs that aim to fix just this annoyance. You've taken a set of pictures you really want to use, but alas, they're all slightly out of focus. I’d be interested in seeing the comparable witness marks for the MicroPrime at the same focal length. You've gone through the trouble to shoot a once-in-a-lifetime family video, only to discover it's all blurry and shaky. Here is an example of the focus throw on the SLR Magic original T2.1 32mm from 4’ to infinity with the final witness mark at 60’. Out-of-focus photos are becoming increasingly popular for some reason, but putting those tacky Instagram filters aside, blurry photos and videos are usually an annoyance.
